Tammy Cote (Pizendewatch Twashi) is an Anicinabe hide tanner and artisan from Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg, whose work is deeply rooted in land-based knowledge, family teachings, and a commitment to cultural sharing. With a background that bridges both traditional and contemporary worlds, Tammy brings a generous approach to her craft—one that emphasizes sharing, patience, and respect for the process.

Holding a degree in geography, Tammy often jokes that she has a “PhD in hide tanning,”. Raised with strong connections to the land, Tammy learned early from her parents, who passed down skills and values rooted in a way of life shaped by living in harmony with the territory. These teachings instilled in Tammy a lasting relationship with nature and a deep respect for the materials it provides.

Tammy specializes in hide tanning, a demanding and time-intensive practice that requires both physical endurance and mental focus. Transforming a raw moose hide into a workable material can take 12 to 15 days, involving repetitive, physically taxing movements. Through her teaching, she encourages learners to persevere—emphasizing that even imperfect hides hold value.

Through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, she shares videos documenting each stage of hide preparation, offering guidance and inspiration to a growing audience. She breaks down the process into accessible steps, helping to demystify what can often seem overwhelming.

In addition to hide tanning, Tammy creates a variety of handcrafted items, including clothing, jewelry, and hair accessories made from materials found in the bush. Whatever she feels inspire to do. And if she doesn’t know how to make something, she’ll find someone who can show her!

Known for her generosity and her role as a “forever auntie,” Tammy sees herself as someone who supports and uplifts others through sharing knowledge and experience. Whether on the land, in her workspace, or online, she continues to create spaces where culture can be practiced, learned, and carried forward.
