Sakia Tania Wabie-Alarie
Sakia is a teacher, multidisciplinary artist, and 2-spirit person. Born to a Quebecois father and an Anicinabekwe mother, her creative process is holistic, inspired by the teachings of the medicine wheel that nourish their vision of life.
Marked by the repercussions of indigenous residential schools and colonialism, Sakia grew up far from their family, culture, and community, without the cultural, spiritual, and emotional security that fosters a child’s development.
I didn’t grow up on a reserve, but I have always been part of the Val-d’Or community. Without any reference points, I took refuge early on in a creative world where music, writing, painting, and drawing offered me deep meaning and comfort. Art has always connected me to the Great Spirit.
Along the way, Sakia studied social work to begin their own healing process and learn how to connect with others, while denouncing social injustices and colonialism. They also trained in energy-based approaches to channel their sensitivity and communicate with their inner, invisible world. Through their company Kisakin, they now embodies heir artistic and spiritual journey.
After several years of healing, Sakia reconnected with their true nature: that of an artist. She currently performs traditional drum songs, recites poetry, paints, creates traditional crafts, performs drag king shows as a 2-spirit person, and stages plays that explore the repercussions of residential schools and the trauma of cultural uprooting. She would like to further explore her songwriting and performing talents, as well as the world of music and theater.
