Katie is a young Anicinabe artist from Timiskaming First Nation. She grew up on the land, surrounded by art and nature, developing a passion for drawing from an early age. Initially drawn to tattooing, she then turned to social services, working with Indigenous women and children affected by violence and trauma.
It was in mourning the death of her grandfather that she returned to painting, instinctively, as an act of healing. She paints her dreams, her ancestors, her deepest emotions. For her, art is medicine – a way of relating to oneself, to gratitude, and to life. She refers to her practice as medicine painting, rooted in intention, gentleness and joy.
Her pictorial universe is vibrant, feminine, inhabited by the figures of mothers, daughters and grandmothers. You can feel the heart, spirit and light of Anicinabek women. Through her creations, Katie consciously chooses to put aside traumas to make room for love. She brings in a deliberate balance: being an artist and a mother, free and rooted, dreamer and advocate. We have the pleasure of seeing her work as the main poster for the Miaja 2025 edition.
“I want to see how far this inner journey can take me… to create a colorful, adventurous life, full of love and gratitude.”
Her wish: to offer her daughter a life full of colors, traveling, and creation.
